Experience the countryside of Rhodes on this full-day private excursion. This will be a great day out and you will be amazed by the beauty of our gorgeous island!
Our private day excursion will start from Filerimos Hill and then we will visit the ruins of Ancient Kamiros. Next in our program is the castle of Kritinia and Monolithos Castle. Then we will return back to your starting point.
First in our program is the famous Filerimos Hill. This place was used as the citadel of the ancient town of Ialyssos. The hill includes the foundations of the temple of Athena Polias, an Early Christian basilica, and a small subterranean Byzantine church. There is a road that sets off from the square that leads to the westernmost point of the hill.
In order to reach this imposing cross and see the splendid view, you need to walk along a pathway known as "Golgothas". It is tree-sheltered, with a series of shrines and scenes of the Holly Passion.
At the end of the road of Martyrdom stands an 18 meters tall cross raised by the Italians in 1930. You will be rewarded with a gorgeous panoramic view of the West Coast.
Kamiros is a destination for history and archeology lovers, 32km far from the city of Rhodes.
Ancient Kameiros was founded by the Dorians in the prehistoric times and it was later inhabited by the Achaeans. Items that have been found a date to as back as the 8th century BC.
The town was destroyed two times by earthquakes, one in 226 BC and the second in 142 BC, after which it was abandoned.
From here we will continue our drive on the West Coast of the Island. On a hill approximately 131 meters above the village of Kritinia, northern Rhodes, stand the ruins of a medieval castle.
The castle is a short climb from the asphalt road and its location offers a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea, the neighboring island of Halki and the port of Kameiros. The castle was built during the period of the Knights of the Order of St. John and this place was chosen because of its strategic location and 360-degree observation view of the sea.
Surrounded by the beautiful landscape you will really enjoy your visit.
From there we will continue our drive among the West Coast of the island and our next stop will be little before we reach the castle of Monolithos. From this point you will be able to soak in the spectacular panoramic view of the castle and grab memorable panoramic photographs before heading to the castle itself.
Next in our program is the castle of Monolithos which was built by the Knights of St. John in the 1480 AD in order to protect the island from attacks and is placed on a rock 100 m. high.
Most of the walls of Monolithos Castle have been ruined for a long time. In the middle of it, you will find a white chapel dedicated to Saint Panteleimon and another smaller chapel, both ruined today. There are also some old cisterns, which were used to collect water and supply the whole area.
Today the castle it offers great views of the sea and the two islets opposite to it. Access to the castle is by a staircase cut into the rock. In fact, the path towards the castle is so rough that no one has ever managed to conquer it.
We will have at least 40 min stop here so you will be able to reach and explore the ruins of the castle and admire the beauty of the place.
We will return back to the city of Rhodes and we can leave you directly to your hotel or ship or at any point of interest
